چکیده

We introduce and discuss Grad’s moment equations for dilute granular systems of hard spheres with dissipative collisions and variable coefficient of restitution, under the assumption of weak inelasticity. An important byproduct is that in this way we obtain an hydrodynamic description of a system of nearly elastic particles by a direct procedure from the Boltzmann equation. In particular, it is shown that the statistical correlation function plays a fundamental role in the decay of the temperature, and that the latter is described, in space homogeneous conditions, by a corrected Haff’s law.

Hydrodynamics from Grad’s equations: What can we learn from exact solutions?

Abstract. Adetailed treatment of the classical Chapman-Enskog derivation of hydrodynamics is given in the framework of Grad’smoment equations. Grad’s systems are considered as theminimal kineticmodels where theChapman-Enskogmethod can be studied exactly, thereby providing the basis to compare various approximations in extending the hydrodynamic description beyond the Navier-Stokes approximation...

Kinetic Theory for Binary Granular Mixtures at Low-Density

Many features of granular media can be modelled as a fluid of hard spheres with inelastic collisions. Under rapid flow conditions, the macroscopic behavior of grains can be described through hydrodynamic equations. At lowdensity, a fundamental basis for the derivation of the hydrodynamic equations and explicit expressions for the transport coefficients appearing in them is provided by the Boltz...

Built upon sand: Theoretical ideas inspired by granular flows

Granulated materials, like sand and sugar and salt, are composed of many pieces that can move independently. The study of collisions and flow in these materials requires new theoretical ideas beyond those in the standard statistical mechanics or hydrodynamics or traditional solid mechanics. Granular materials differ from standard molecular materials in that frictional forces among grains can di...

Numerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method

This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...

Hydrodynamics of Inelastic Maxwell Models

An overview of recent results pertaining to the hydrodynamic description (both Newtonian and non-Newtonian) of granular gases described by the Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell models is presented. The use of this mathematical model allows us to get exact results for different problems. First, the Navier–Stokes constitutive equations with explicit expressions for the corresponding transp...
